What is the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation?
Inspired by the desire to build philanthropy in Carlsbad that would have impact immediately and forever, a group of citizens partnered with The San Diego Foundation to establish the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF) in 2007. This community-specific effort would help meet the emerging needs of Carlsbad by encouraging and increasing responsible and effective philanthropy by and for those living and working in Carlsbad.
What is our Vision?
The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is the most effective funding force in supporting, strengthening and growing nonprofits in the Carlsbad community.
What is our Mission?
Our mission is to advance philanthropy in Carlsbad in order to:
- Build community excellence
- Stimulate innovation
- Enhance capacity of nonprofits
What is The San Diego Foundation?
Founded in 1975, The San Diego Foundation was created by and for the people of the San Diego region. Its purpose is to promote and increase effective and responsible charitable giving. The Foundation manages nearly $500 million in assets, almost half of which reside in permanent endowment funds. Since its inception, The Foundation has granted more than $600 million to nonprofits serving the community.
What does “CCF is an affiliate of TSDF” mean?
As an affiliate, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation benefits from the experience and management of The San Diego Foundation. The San Diego Foundation provides back-office support (investment management, staff support, marketing support, and topical expertise). In return, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation shares The San Diego Foundation its local knowledge of the emerging needs and causes important to the Carlsbad community.
Who may participate in the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation?
The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is encouraging everyone who lives, works, and plays in Carlsbad to participate in the Foundation.
What is an endowment?
An endowment preserves and increases a charitable gift permanently because the original gift is never spent. Only a portion of the earnings from its investment are granted out each year, so the endowment remains and grows. This is a powerful tool for leaving a legacy and supporting a beloved cause or organization.
Do other cities/communities have similar foundations?
Yes. Some communities have independent foundations, while others work jointly to expand potential. The San Diego Foundation currently has eight affiliates across the county – Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona, La Jolla, Chula Vista, Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch.
Where does my money go?
Half of each of your contribution goes to immediate grant-making, the other half is deposited to build the permanent for endowment. A minimal fee (1.25 percent) is paid to The San Diego Foundation for its back-office support of the activities of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.
In 2008, CCF made grants of $43,000 to support two local youth programs promoting business and science (subjects identified as the ‘focus’ for the year). In 2009, the membership of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation expects to grant out $100,000 to support local programs providing services to the community’s senior citizens (a new ‘focus’ topic for the year).
What is the voting process?
After proposals have been read, the sites have been visited, the Grants Committee offers options from which the membership may vote the use of its contributed monies. The votes are tallied, and the organizations receiving the most votes are awarded the funds.
How do I get involved with a committee?
All CCF members are welcome to join one of the committees (membership, grants, events, marketing). You may speak to John Duca, Regional Manager, at john@sdfoundation.org, or speak to our committee chairpersons about your desire to participate (identified within the board roster).
What are the options by payment of membership monies?
Individuals and businesses interested in becoming members of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation may make a membership contribution by paying cash, credit card, securities, or transfers from another charitable fund.
For larger gifts, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is able to accept planned gifts in the form of cash, securities, and real estate.
